Wow.

"I am addicted to traveling, to being on planes, to transiting and arriving, to seeing and experiencing new things, to remind myself that I am part of the world, but at the same time, the world is like the vast wilderness of Alaska, much bigger than me, much grander, and that I’m pretty insignificant in comparison–and being in witness of this awesome wonder, the aurora borealis–I’m the happiest I can be, and the tears that are nearly frozen on my lashes are not for sorrow or want, but from feeling at peace."

This is so moving. The entire entry is so moving. You have me in tears. I love your writing and how you put together your ideas about travel.

Amazing. I've never had the opportunity to see you write at length before; you have such a power with words. Your experiences in Alaska sound spectacular, and I look forward to hearing you write about all your many journeys to come.

Oh, Iceland!!! I look forward to see photos on your blog. I have always wanted to go and will be crossing my fingers for you! When are you going? I hope there will be enough darkness for you there so you can see them. I think the next time we go looking for the lights, we may go to Iceland. Have a wonderful family trip!

Hello there! Thanks for stopping by. I shot on manual. I played with the ISO settings anywhere from 800-1600 on a Canon 5d. The night these photos were taken, I used a 20mm f/2.8 lens, and the exposures ranged 7-12 seconds. I don't hide my exif data, so it's all there. If I could do it again, I would not use the 20mm lens on the full frame I had as the the vignetting was way too pronounced and the dark edges really bothered me. Fine for portraits, not so great for landscape.

Since we showed up on the mountaintop at 10 pm, and the lights didn't come out till around midnight/1:00am I had plenty of time just to take photos of snow and trees and play around.

I completely understand the desire to see the lights. They were on my bucket list as well. The camera does pick up more green than the naked eye can see due to the long exposures, but Diana, when the lights danced across the sky, it is just amazing. I could not help but stare in awe at just how beautiful this earth is.

Tien, these are heartbreakingly beautiful I don't think I've ever really believed these to be real, but I guess they are, since someone I 'know' just took these incredible pictures. I am so thankful that I will be going to Iceland soon with my family- I hope to experience just a little of this magic myself!

Breathtaking! These shots are amazingly gorgeous, as if from some mythical dream world. I love how the twilight of the night/day enhances the vibrancy of the dancing lights. The mountains look more purple than they probably are just because of the contrast with the lights. Did you have to twiddle with the camera settings to capture them right? Or did you just leave it in auto and bask in the magic? I am completely jealous of this trip, since seeing the northern lights is on the bucket list. Thanks for sharing - and please post more pics if you have them!

ah, soon enough you'll be the photographer with a crate of equipment following you around, to have the right lenses! I love the variety of shapes in orchids- that last photo looks like crispy bacon flowers (yum!)

Yeah, definitely watch out for the wind chill...brrr...basically look at that when you read the weather forecast, not the 'actual' temperature! And a good down coat will protect you in any chill!
